FAQs

Is Team Coaching the same as team development?

Again, no, but there are things in common. Team development usually focuses on the work of the team - training in governance, support in giving feedback, awareness on individual preferences and styles for example. While the team is taught these new skills alongside each other, they are working as individuals and absorbing knowledge from an expert. Often team development initiatives are one-off, irregular, with little follow on.

Team coaching addresses both the relationships and work of the team, using insight already within the team, as part of an ongoing, long-term support programme.

What is executive coaching?

Executive coaching is a thinking partnership, in which the coach accompanies, encourages and guides the coachee in the process of reflection, observation, dialogue, awareness building and ultimately goal-setting. The coachee is always the subject matter expert, the one who owns the goal and the answers, and is responsible for the change. Coaching provides a space and process to explore limiting beliefs that hold us back, or the tangle of competing thoughts that slow us down, and evoke the awareness that can unlock potential.

Is there executive coaching within Team Coaching programmes?

Yes, often individual coaching can be really powerful as an addition to Team Coaching. The team addresses what needs to change as a group, and an individual can bring any challenges arising for them personally into executive coaching. It’s a very powerful combination.

What are leadership workshops?

When specific leadership skills or knowledge are missing in business leaders, individual coaching isn’t going to be the answer. Instead, Leadership Workshops are designed to either support alongside Team Coaching engagements , or as standalone solutions. Workshops offer critical leadership support centred around a specific skill set, using robust embodied-learning methodology, and with the team as a group learning set.

What is team coaching?

Team Coaching is a leadership development approach that brings the enquiry, awareness and insight of executive coaching to whole leadership teams. It supports senior teams to shift their thinking from individual contribution, to collective impact, by examining the team as an entity in it's own right, and increasing the value that the team can generate for its organsiation.

Who is team coaching for?

Team coaching is particularly suitable for teams facing any of the following challenges:

- dispersed global teams seeking greater unity and alignment

- new teams learning to becoming high performing

- teams facing new or challenging commercial circumstances

- teams of talented individual contributors who may be pulling in different directions

- teams who need to develop greater ownership and autonomy

- teams who rely too heavily on their team leader/CEO

- teams who are less than the sum of their parts, when they could be more

What are some common team challenges within teams?

Typically, trust and effective efficient communication prevent teams from achieving their highest potential for productivity. Team Coaching address these challenges, and creates a safe, structured and positive environment in which teams can work on whatever needs to change for them. This could be difficult conversations, challenging outdated norms, raising levels of trust and communication, gaining momentum behind a new ambition, breaking old habits- the team brings the need, and the coach works with them to try out new ways of talking, thinking, sharing and creating in order to meet that need.

Is Team Coaching the same as team building?

No, but they do have elements in common. Team building is usually used to improve relationships between team members. It’s useful for getting to know each other, and completing tasks and challenges that are not work based. Team building activities usually focus on the relationships within the team, are one-off activities and take place outside the working environment. From gin-tasting to gardening, team building can be great fun, but usually doesn’t move the dial on team effectiveness over the long term.

Team coaching addresses both the relationships and the work of the team, over the long term, for lasting results.
